Universal Re-Works: Visible Repairs service.

The odd tear, a random hole, that threadbare collar – aren’t these just the hallmarks of the things we love? Why not Re-Work these blemishes into the badges of honour they deserve to be? Here at UW, we like to think that a visible patch or darning stitch only enhances the aesthetic of the garment whilst giving it a new lease of life. For us, stuff that’s worth wearing, is definitely worth repairing.

Welcome to the home of the Universal Re-Works: Visible Repairs service.

What is a visible repair?

The art of visible repair is all about wearing your repairs with pride. We believe that a visible patch or darning stitch only enhances the aesthetic of the garment. The Universal Re-Works: Visible Repairs service is for garments that need a new lease of life when you are happy for the world to see the repair. For alterations (where you can’t see how the garment has been altered), please contact customer services or speak to one of our fantastic retail team in store who will do their best to point you in the right direction. For more information on the wider Universal Re-Works initiative please head over to the Universal Works Journal.

How do I access the Universal Re-Works: Visible Repairs service?

We have created this page as a resource hub for all things Re-Works. Everything to do with our Visible Repairs Service can be found or accessed through this page. You can also access the service by talking to one of our helpful retail team who can help start the process for you in store.

How does it work?

Our team will work closely with you to facilitate the best results for your visible repair. The process is simple, if you’ve got a garment that needs repairing or is looking a bit tired, send us some snaps, our team will assess it and can discuss your options, once you are happy with the direction, we will liaise with a local repairs expert and official Re-Works partner to facilitate the repair and once it’s ready we will arrange shipment back to you.

Is there a cost for the service?

Yes, in the early stages of our trial we didn’t ask for a fee as we felt this was only fair whilst we assessed the viability of the service. We’ve done everything we can to keep costs down for the fully fledged service and you can find a list of the costs at the bottom of this page. As each case is different, costs may vary but we’ve done our best to help you estimate the cost of your visible repair as accurately as possible.

Can I use this service in a Universal Works store?

Yes, bring in your garments to any one of our Universal Works stores (not currently available in our partnership stores in Birmingham and Berlin) and our store staff will help facilitate your repair alongside a local tailor.

What if I’m not happy with the repair?

Our Customer Services team will work closely with you to select the right option for your repair but we kindly ask you to accept our terms and conditions before we proceed with the work involved (Please refer to the full terms and conditions below). Please note, we don’t accept returns or refunds on Re-Worked products.

Terms & Conditions.

Visible Repairs.

We will be using visible stitching techniques to repair your garment, we believe that this technique adds beauty to the garment and makes it extra unique. However, we appreciate that this is not for everyone. If you are looking for an unnoticeable repair, then this is not the service for you. (Our advice would be to check out your local tailor or laundrette service who should be able to help).

There's no going back!

We are confident that you will love your repaired piece, however in the (very unlikely) case that you are not happy with the repair, unfortunately, we are unable to return the garments back to their original condition. We will also not be able to refund or replace any items of clothing if you are unhappy with the final result.

Shipping.

Customers must cover the cost of shipping to our HQ address & the return postage of your visibly repaired garment.

Price & Payment.

Please note that you will be charged for the repair & for the postage. Once our seamstress has repaired your item we will charge you, as soon as we have received payment we will post your item and provide you with your tracking details.

Good things take time.

We take pride in everything that we do, in order to deliver the best service, we will aim to have your garment back with you in up to 4 weeks.

Visible Repair - A Case Study.

“We have a three year old son so I'm on my knees a lot playing with him and so on. The track pant style is so comfy as well and is the perfect fit for hanging out with a toddler and rolling around on the floor. I quite liked the worn look, but with cords, it's a little different to the fades you get on something like denim, so I was curious to find out what a repair/Re-Work could look like.”

Ally, Universal Works Customer.

Once the details of the repair have been confirmed, our customer services team cycle the item to be re-worked by a local repairs expert and official Re-Works partner.

The damage will be assessed by the expert and they will consider how best to repair the garment keeping in mind the original brief from the customer.

In this case, our Re-Works partner, Gay at 'Lived-In Repairs' Nottingham stitched deadstock blue cord in the opposite direction over the worn area on the knee, adding extra reinforcement to the garment.

Here is a before and after of the visible repair; we hope you’ll agree that Gay did a great job of repairing the trousers and gave them a new lease of life. Job well done in our opinion!
