SS23 - "Chance Encounters"

For Universal Works, Spring signifies the return of a healthy spontaneity and zest for life. An organic story of beauty, nature and chance encounters, Spring Summer 2023 is inspired by great American landscapes fused with hazy summer walks on the British coastline. A season of colour and texture, and matching tonal shades; think rugged high deserts in sandstone browns, prairies bursting with delicate spring flora in yellows and pinks and expansive skies in blues and greys.

All of the Universal Works favourites remain with added details that subtly hark back to a (Peaceful) Western theme. Triangular pocket flaps come into play alongside decorative yokes, denims, chambrays and cool checks reinforce the mood, our cloud denim there for a real “space cowboy “ look. It’s a casual vibe, the kind of collection where the protagonist effortlessly wears a cowboy hat with a pair of sneakers.

FLOWER MOUNTAIN X UNIVERSAL WORKS

For Spring/Summer 2023, Universal Works presents a seasonal-long partnership with Japanese footwear brand Flower Mountain, a natural encounter between two like-minded companies. More to do with a shoe that works with the seasonal mood and less about a “drop”, the end result is dual branded clothing and footwear that sits as a part of the wider Universal Works collection.

HOTEL DELUXE

It's that time of year again when we visit the best hotel you've never stayed in: Hotel Deluxe.

The latest seasonal trip to Hotel Deluxe is inspired by a notional film that exists only in your imagination. Memories of hazy summer nights, the sunsets, the twilight, the faded colours. This time around we find ourselves in India in late summer; not quite The Darjeeling Express, but there is a palpable hint of Anderson in the atmosphere.

Universal Works Co-Founder David Keyte has been travelling to India for many years now, often on a mission to source handcrafted fabrics in small quantities alongside the highest quality simple cottons. This love of India is more evident than ever in the Hi Summer 23 collection. It’s a celebration of it’s textiles, it’s people, it’s colours and is inspired by personal travel photos of everyday life taken over many a trip gone by.

The appreciation of everyday life is woven into the identity of the collection. Utilising hand embroidery seen on shirts and outerwear, Ikat weaves, herringbone cottons alongside that typically UW mix of more modern textiles that are sourced from recycled and upcycled materials. All perfect for those long summer days.
