SS22 | Stepping Outside The Frame.

For SS22 Universal Works have brought the concept of ‘Stepping Outside the Frame’ to life. Using a backdrop of interconnected free-standing frames and suspended mirrors, we invite the viewer to consider a fresh new perspective. The roots of the season are inspired by the work of mid-century American photographer Todd Webb and his book, ‘Outside the Frame’. 

This 255-page odyssey of optimism captures the cultural changes taking place in Africa in 1958. From cover to cover, what stands out most, is an attitude of sophistication, confidence and liberation. This uplifting flavour became the focal point for the shapes, tones and silhouettes of the new Universal Works SS22 collection. 

Taking this sensation to a physical level, the shoot is set in a modernist hall of mirrors, which was custom-built to encourage interaction and self-reflection. Doorways and openings criss-cross without boundaries, in a bid to represent the imminent sense of freedom and the journey towards independence (from empire rule) that is palpable in every shot of Todd Webb’s book. 

The installation is fully immersive with surprise floating images and unexpected crops created by the model’s journey through the structures, taking twists and turns without being choreographed. With multiple views created by the dream like atmosphere, there’s a surreal element to movement through the set. The overarching theme puts autonomy at centre stage – this isn’t a static, stuffy presentation, it’s a fluid, spontaneous stroll towards high summer utopia.
