Lockdown Listening: Mohawk General Store, USA.
Tell us a little about your store.
We are a husband and wife team who together founded Mohawk General Store in 2008. We now have four physical locations and of course an online store. We also design our own collection called SMOCK and we make it between Japan and Los Angeles. When we started it was all womenswear then I quit my day job to help out and started buying menswear from my friends like Daiki Suzuki (Engineered Garments) and Chris Olberding (Gitman Vintage) which allowed me to meet a lot of new friends like David Keyte :)
What is your all-time favourite “feel good” track to listen to in-store?
Its on the mix…Tudo o Que Voce Podia Ser by Milton Nascimento
What was your favourite artist you have seen live or the favourite club you went to in the past?
Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk just passed away yesterday so I have very fond recollections of seeing Kraftwerk live at Coachella in 2004. I think they changed outfits and stage sets like 5 times…incredible show. I remember dancing at the after-party in an open field with Fred Schneider of the B52’s before launching into another dimension.
As a DJ, as well as a store owner, does LA have any influence in your music or in the aesthetic of Mohawk?
I moved to LA from NYC in 2003 and all the sunshine and fresh air has definitely ’softened’ my musical taste. We have so many clients that are musicians and work in the music industry either in front or behind the scenes so I am able to create music references with the buy and the ambience of the space. I also buy and sell vintage hi-fi. I have a different sound system in each shop that fits the musical vibration of each individual space.
